“We all need to inflict a little chaos.” – Jeff Grimm

As a budding young artist, Jeff Sawyer, better known currently as Jefrey Mikal Grimm, had all of the influences necessary to be completely comfortable with expressing every aspect of his individual artistic being. Ranging from the works of Rob Zombie to legendary frightsters we all know and love (Jaws and Freddy Krueger), the avenue that Grimm was bound to choose was quite clear early on: he knew it would be as gruesome as it was liberating, and as demonic as it was beautiful. Pulling from life influences such as his mother and Anton LaVey (founder of the Church of Satan) as well as alternative photographer Jeffrey Scott and Wes Craven, who have both made massive artistic impressions in Grimm’s endeavors in the art world, Grimm City sprang to life.

While seemingly a path headed straight to harsh criticism and constant moral battles, this artist just plan didn’t give a fuck. Essentially what this photographer had come to do simply had to be done. After a period spent shooting live music performances as well as skateboarding events, the time had finally come for the vision that had been brewing and blossoming for years began to take shape. The style of the Grimm City Girls, the main focus and the undoubted image of the entire Grimm City empire, can be described as this: a removal of society’s stereotypes that make a woman “acceptable”. The photos are often criticized by the closed-minded as demoralizing, which couldn’t be further from the truth. Directly quoted from Grimm himself, “when all is said and done with whatever I do, I want all females to know that whatever society says is bullshit, and that acceptance sits inside of them, not an issue of Vogue.”

Each individual photo session is meant to release the subject emotionally, as Grimm’s entire purpose is to produce art that pushes the envelope. For that to happen, the model must be comfortable and open with herself, her photographer, as well as the entire world of people who will take inspiration from just a single photograph showcasing her in her raw form. Whether drenched in fake blood for Grimm’s signature zombie feel, or throwing a mean face at the camera sans blood, the photos are the epitome of what the artist’s crooked mine is set out to prove.

As for the future of Grimm City? The artist paints this picture: “where most people want to be famous, I don’t. I want to be infamous, bigger than Jesus. For better or worse, I want to be a household name, to be protested, I want to be hated, I want to be shot at.” An affinity for this type of alternative art, as well as living a somewhat sadistic, entirely unconventional lifestyle has played a part in creating a sort of social buffer around Grimm. Grimm struggles with being looked up to, as he has describes that he oftentimes feels like a “broken role model”, due to his admitted ongoing battle with substance abuse. To put it bluntly, he has spent a good deal of time pondering how anyone does in fact stay sober in a world where so many fucked up things occur. Revelations such as the aforementioned may seem sadistic and unconventional…but thoughts like these are what ultimately keep Grimm City alive.
