About Me

I came to photography through a love of process. Technically inclined, it was the mechanics of photography that I found stimulating. I found having control over shooting and developing my own material personally rewarding. From this foundation grew my love of observation and exploration. I strongly believe in the power of the image to influence. As long as we have eyes to see, regardless of the format, photography will continue to be relevant. It inspires me to think that one has the power to do all that with a little box. Much of my work is influenced by and is a conglomeration of my experiences. My evolving style is based on a journalistic approach to photography. I feel that spontaneous moments can be more meaningful than ones that are carefully posed. It is my goal to be as minimally invasive as possible, being an observer rather than a participant.

Photography for me is using my surroundings to find something unique. I am inspired by strange looks, loneliness, smirks, smiles, frowns, aged wisdom and youth. For me photography is more than snapping a picture. It is freezing in time an emotion before it becomes a distant memory. As my interests change so does my subject matter. As I struggle to find concepts that are meaningful I have moved past the pure esthetics of a composition. My goal is to tell a story that cannot be conveyed with words. As my subject matter has changed over time my approach has always been the same; simply to capture subjects that I find moving. As I have matured so has my work. I have grown away from static imagery to pursue things with greater emotional value.

My current work is directed towards the study of candid street photography. Much of this work has been with a Russian roll camera. I enjoy the challenge of; being intimately familiar with my equipment, mental freedom to concentrate on a subject, the ability to appraise an interesting situation and act on it, and understanding exposure and processing techniques for unpredictable lighting situations. Though I cannot reinvent photography I can discover new ways of looking at the world, capturing how people look and live in other walks of life. Having an open mind has enabled me to try different approaches and allows the future of my work to be an open path. I look forward to expanding my work into the studio as well as trying new films, techniques and equipment.
