My name is Pumla Ngxekana. I’m a Fashion Design graduate since 2003 with a 3 year Diploma from one of South Africa’s foremost fashion design schools, LISOF I’m also the winner of the LISOF fashion design initiation competition in 2001 and a finalist of the Smirnoff Fashion Design competition in 2003.
I have worked as pattern maker, a garment production supervisor, helped to launched and establish several clothing labels. I also worked as a course developer and facilitator for a fashion school. For me teaching fashion design came naturally because I am a strong believer that shared knowledge is more affective and encourages one to venture beyond conventional thinking to find new innovative approaches to clothing production. I have a personal drive and determination that saw my work on the 2003 to 2007 South African Fashion Week Runway. For my first collection in 2003 I collaborated with crafters who specialized in embroidery, the collection reflected a showing the richness of the African culture on a contemporary level. Since then I’ve worked on several sustainable development projects through the South African Department of Arts and Culture. I moved to New York in 2008 and after four year of working and learning in New York, I’m establishing a clothing line called NOMPINDZI after my late mother who passed away 7 months ago. This clothing line is me evolving forward as a woman, sister, aunt, friend …. to a liberated fashion designer. This collection is inspired by the art of a woman’s body, empowering her to express her softness, elegance, confidence and seductive nature yet modern simplicity and ease that still embrace my South African heritage
