All waking hours our eyes wander, taking in the world around us, the details in front of us, people and things and the backgrounds and distances. Shapes and forms.  Light and shadow and color. Our gaze is always in motion—until it stops.

In my photography I represent landforms, plants, animals, buildings, abstract forms and the human body in ways that reflect emotion, the interplay of light on surface, and the relationship between the subject and its surroundings...those surprises that arrest the eye.

Photography for me isn’t the documentation of a subject. It is a trace memory of a visual experience—how light falls, how curves, angles and lines lead the eye, how contrasting elements surprise or create tension at the moment that the gaze finds a resting point.

In my editorial or documentary photography, I seek compositions that provoke curiosity or enchantment in ways that draw the viewer closer to the subject.

With human subjects, I prefer naturalistic nudes under natural light. This can be inside or outside. The three things I look for in a model's portfolio—and in my pictures—are Form, Light and Emotion. Experienced models understand this and present themselves accordingly. Those are pictures I make. I adhere to the highest standards of respect and dignity. I collaborate in making beautiful images by encouraging the model to use her form expressively and according to her own experience and creative vision. In this way, we collaborate. And surprise each other.

Even in the digital age, I believe that every photograph must be developed, and use post-processing to reveal desired effects or elements in the picture that need to be coaxed or corrected in order to emphasize the picture’s inner visual message. These are the final touches that produce beautiful art.
