July 16, 2011 1:40pm A lovely image: wistful, introspective and styled beautifully to appear a bit out of its time. I think of the young men from Europe who immigrated to the States at the start of the 20th century and hoped to find their fortunes here. Sometimes they did, and sometimes they barely got by. Perhaps this character is wondering what HIS fate will be. This is wonderful art not only because of its beauty but because it invites the viewer to ponder the character of men's destiny. Occasionally, yes, we become "powerful." Far more often, however, we do not. We've heard so much of the "glass ceiling" that women face. This image implies the "glass cellar" in which MILLIONS of men reside.
