About Me

I am a serious, advanced, amateur photographer who spent more than 40 years in public affairs, public relations, marketing and corporate communications before retiring.

Until a dozen years ago, most of my photography focused on people, nature and travel; some was published nationally; a photo essay on professional athletes was given a solo gallery exhibition.

As someone who has been photographing for more than seven decades, I have shot with old Kodak Brownies, 35mm and half-frame cameras, a 4x5 Graflex, medium format (120) cameras, and for the last decade, digital cameras.

When I began photographing the nude in 2008, I made a conscious decision to work exclusively in black and white, and in a "classical" mode emphasizing lighting, shape and natural body form. The best way to explain my goal it is to tell you that I want to photograph women as women, not sex objects. Very often, a simple, relaxed pose is the best expression of that person and what I'm trying to capture.

My photography is most inspired by the classical B&W nude photographs taken by people such as Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Weston and Ruth Bernhard. Each emphasized the beauty of the human body; none was overtly sexual or pornographic.

When working with a model for the first time, I like to meet beforehand or talk on the phone to make sure there is a comfort factor for both of us.  I ask models to sign a standard Model Release.

"Jim Lubetkin, photographer extraordinaire, captured the real me. The quality of his work is beyond anything I've ever seen before. I am truly flattered that he chose to do a photo session with me. He made me feel completely relaxed and comfortable, and his candid shots in black and white are incredible! Thank you, Jim. " Read less
