About Me

I spent nearly 50 years designing my own and other organizations' publications, along with a career in management and entrepreneurship. I worked for others in education and economic development and for myself in publishing for the health-fitness and allied-health fields. Leaving behind my vocations in 2-D formats, I began sculpting clay in 2004 and casting it in bronze and pewter, and dabbled in carving onyx and alabaster.

I am mostly self-taught in art but, along the way, I studied graphic arts as part of my MA degree in public communication at Syracuse University and took several courses in sculpture and foundry methods at Palomar College, San Marcos, CA.

The sculpture is signed "Ed Ward," though I use my real name, Ed(ward) Pitts, on my graphic arts and photography. Art West Press is my voluntary effort to publish books and advertising campaigns for fellow artists and writers in Wallowa County, the far northeast corner of Oregon (so I still have a hand in publishing, although that hand brings back no money). Examples of that work are the posters for the local Festival of Arts.

I live in the Old-West-style City of Joseph (incorporated 1887; 1,000 population) with many artists, musicians, galleries and four fine-art bronze foundries within six miles. I look out my studio window at the 9,600 ft. Wallowa Mountains, that keep some of their snow year-round. I don't turn out a lot of sculpture, and I am even worse at marketing it. The sculpture is shown at the Phinney Gallery, Joseph, OR.
