About Me

My name is Gary Gilmore and i'm the guy who draws all of the NYHC PUNK Posters/Flyers and Album covers under the name WRONGWAYFLYERS.

Biography:

The art of Gary Gilmore was not the product of organized industrial art education; it came direct from the imagination and natural ability Gary was born with. Just as Gary's fan base and appreciation did not start off in the formal art world, it was born on the streets. It started off in suburban New York City when his art for local hardcore and punk bands started finding their way from being disposable flyers to sought after and collected pieces of art. It didn't take long before these flyers (of which hundreds of thousands were made) started finding their ways onto walls around the world, bringing with them, the appreciation and recognition of the art of Gary Gilmore.

Gilmore started doing flyers for local shows around 1992. Gary chose a moniker for his art work, "Wrongway Flyers" and added this logo to almost everything he has done since then. His work grew from flyers and handbills to include full sized silk screen posters, album covers, t-shirts and tattoos. As his art found its way around the small scene, bigger bands and venues started calling on him to produce work for them. Being so close to New York City is was inevitable that at one point or another, his art was to be found in just about every music and book store, and in venues like CBGB's, Coney Island High, Wetlands, Knitting Factory, Irving Plaza (now called "The Fillmore"), and ABC No Rio, and in true D.I.Y. style, it was often Gary himself handing out these flyers.

The content of his work has always been satirical and a mash up of social commentary, current events, politics and culture. Some say his art is an example of detournement, while others call it (sociological) recuperation. I'd say he's just letting out whatever is annoying him at the time and/or subjects he feels like praising or pissing on. Sometimes this upsets people and there have been times when his art was even banned. For instance his "Princess Die" poster was banned in England by the Royal Mail, who confiscated and destroyed a number of copies before they were allowed into the country. Gary's art tends to have absurd sub-plots and inside jokes hidden in the details. Through the years, Gary's art has captured the imagination and curiosity of those who have gazed upon it, garnering a range of emotion, thought, and question. But no one can just glance by it without being drawn into it.

Gary has worked with some the biggest bands in the punk and hardcore music world including Joey Ramone's 1st Birthday Bash, The Exploited, The Casualties, The Business, Misfits, Danzig, Madball, Sheer Terror, Discharge, Blowfly, Anal Cunt, The Damned, Verbal Abuse, Sick of it All, G.B.H., Angelic Upstarts, Ludichrist, Crumbsuckers, Six and Violence, Killing Time, Murphy's Law, Shutdown, Blanks 77, 25 Ta Life, Aus Rotten, Breakdown, Merauder, Hatebreed, The Krays, Kill Your Idols, N.R.S.V., V.O.D., Uppercut, Conflict, Cause For Alarm and hundreds more.

Gary's work has been reused by others for their own flyer needs, especially outside the U.S., without Gary's permission nor knowledge. If you ask Gary why he isn't mad about this, he would simply say thanks for the compliment and to please spell his name correctly.

Gary's work can also be found in a number of books including the "The Art of Modern Rock" by Paul Grushkin and Dennis King (Chronicle Books) which is a major chronicling of modern poster artists from the last 20 years. His work was also published in the book "Electric Frankenstein, High-Energy Rock & Roll Poster Art" by Sal Canzonieri (Dark Horse Books) as well as many magazines.
