About Me

a former production artist/art director, tim left the advertising field after eight years and, to support his growing photography addiction, began working as a desktop support tech, most notably at the disneytoons (dts) division of the walt disney company. he eventually took over the day-to-day management of the dts training lab where he taught both photoshop and computer skills. upon his departure from disney, he formed light+shadow as a public outlet for his imaging work.

"i spent my first five years as a photographer shooting landscapes and animal portraits. I couldn't quite grasp how to make people work in an artistic context. i was always asked 'why are there no people in your photos?' that absence was a conscious decision - people just didn't fit into the scenes i was seeing in my head visually. later, when i took my first telephoto zoom lens on a trip to australia and started shooting candids of people in the street, it all began to make sense - my images started telling stories through faces and tones and that, in turn, affected all of my work, including the landscapes."

"what fascinates me now is craft - documenting how people do 'things,' be it their jobs, their hobbies or whatever. it is amazing the insight to be had from a photograph of a person or persons completely engrossed in an act of doing something...anything, be it music, writing, organizing, managing people, or even photography. the best portraits tell you something about the subject - they 'speak' to the observor - and you can learn more from witnessing people "create" than you can from someone sitting on a stool in front of a bunch of lights and a canvas background."
