"
In the Mind of a Model "
As a little girl I grew up watching Janet Jackson and Britney Spears performing on television. I remember running to the bathroom mirror and pretending to be them. It was at this point that I realized I wanted to sing, dance, and model. Now that I am 20 years old, I decided to put my fears behind me and pursue this dream. Despite the fact of having little money, I built up enough courage to just do it. I began building my vocals skills and attending a jazz dance class at El Camino College to improve my dancing techniques. I am no longer afraid to follow my modeling dream either.

Being an inspired model has been a tough journey so far. Because of my height, I have been restricted to commercial print modeling. Doing research on the process of becoming a model was frustrating and confusing. I was lost. With time, I came across a photographer on facebook and asked him about his rates. His rates were totally out of my budget which made me realize that I had to figure out a way to get good quality photos for an affordable price. Not only that, but I also had to find makeup artists and a wardrobe stylist.

I shopped at Goodwill to buy outfits for my photo shoots and I did my own make up to save money. I went to Kinkos to print my faceshots and portfolio pictures because it was a more affordable alternative, and I began sending my comp card to modeling agencies. Finding an agency with a commercial print division that allowed all heights was another challenge. I spent a lot of time searching and received many rejections. I didn’t fit the height requirement for most agencies. Finally I began receiving some positive responses. As I waited for an answer from the different modeling agencies, I also submitted my photos to as many casting calls for positive music videos as I could find. As long as I was not degrading myself or wearing degrading clothes on set I was willing to take the job.

You may not yet see me in Ebony or Vogue magazine, but my dreams of becoming a well known print model is still within reach. I have overcome many obstacles in my life that have made me a stronger woman. I come from a single parent home with an absent father, and despite all the odds against me I have managed to pave a way for myself. One day, I dream of modeling for Kimora Lee Simons or sitting next to Beyonce. I want to talk to Gucci designers about being a catalog model for their clothing line. Although I do not fit the stereotypical image of a model, I feel I can bring something different to the industry. Once I get going, I am going to keep my flame. If my modeling career blossoms the way I want it to, I will use it as an opportunity to push for my other goals. I want to create my own clothing line and one day open The House of Mulan, which will be my own high fashion modeling agency that will accept a variety of different models. I want to have my own fragrance. I want to build an empire. I have learned being a model goes beyond taking pretty pictures and walking a run way. It is about embodying a strong image of yourself that shines through in any light. I value my experiences and I live day by day knowing that I am one step closer to my dreams.
