About Me

it is better to be a part of beauty
for one instant and then cease to
exist than to exist forever
and never be a part of beauty...

i do not agree with him
myself i would rather have
half the happiness and twice
the longevity

but at the same time i wish
there was something i wanted
as badly as he wanted to fry himself

-- from "The Lesson of the Moth" by Don Marquis

I've been shooting many years, mostly with film cameras.  From 35mm with a Canon AV-1 (it had no shutter speed dial to adjust, and I learned exposure the hard way), to medium format with a Mamiya RZ67, to large format with a Busch Pressman -- shooting with film taught me to be precise and minimize technical errors.

I shoot most often now with a Nikon digital SLR.  The instant feedback is great.  But it's still just a light tight box with some bells and whistles attached.  Photography -- especially portraits -- is still about light, and knowing good light from bad, and how to manage the light that exists and the light you bring.

And at the same time, do something more than just say "cheese!" to the model.  What challenges me (and most certainly appeals to me) is balancing the technical aspects of light management and exposure and composition, with the "art" of working with a model in a relationship to capture a fleeting and undefinable mood or moment.

I've been fascinated by beauty and glamour photography from early, when watching old films with Ingrid Bergman and Grace Kelly, and how they were lit.  I love vintage and retro inspired looks and would always love to hear from models with the same addiction.

I don't do this as a profession, and it's not about money.  I work, parent, play, and then there's those cats, too. I am on time, professional, and communicate.  But I also try to stay open to the unexpected, and to keep the doors of perception cleansed.

I'm passionate about compassion (charterforcompassion.org) and I try to be compassionate about passion.
