About Me

Tom Filipkowski (b.: NJ, 1979) lived and worked in NJ and NY before moving to Key West in 2004. A graduate of the School of Visual Arts in NYC, Tom interned for head photographer Mark Seliger at Rolling Stone and for FHM magazine, and was a student teacher at School of Visual Arts and International Center of Photography. Richard Kern was a mentor, and other influences include Terry Richardson, Helmut Newton, and Dana Hoey. His work has been shown at a group show at Gallery Duggal, a group show at Stone Soup Gallery in Key West, and a solo show at School of Visual Arts Gallery.
Tom's work is a carefully constructed and compelling conversation on working-class underground culture, with its temporary state of subjective beauty, and often depicts young women as icons at the peak of their unflinching, hard-edged sensuality. His subjects give off a raw power and reflect an identity intimate with the harsh realities of a debased culture.
