About Me

Although primarily an illustrator, printmaker and all around graphic artist, I have always had a fascination with pin up art and photography. After having done many model photo shoots as a basis for drawing, I decided to start shooting some with the aim of actually making good photographs.

I was was born 1956 in Oakland CA.

In 1974 I enrolled at the San Francisco Art institute, majoring in sculpture and printmaking. I also joined my first band, the infamous Psycotic Pineapple. Inspired by Mad magazine and local underground comix, I created the band’s mascot, Pynoman.

By 1977 the band was playing around the local scene, and I was drawing
Pynoman flyers for almost every gig. Some of these flyers were reproduced in the rock’n’roll poster bible “The Art of Rock” (Abbeville Press 1987) and in 1992 all were
published by the artist, “the art of John Seabury Vol. 1 Psycotic Pineapple”.

I have worked as freelance illustrator for various musical acts, record labels and national magazines.

Starting 1989,I began a series of black and white flyers for Slim’s, an SF nightclub.
And in 1989, with the temporary reunion of the PP and my involvement at Slim’s,
I jump started my poster making career.

By 1993, I was teaching himself the art of silkscreen printing and began creating
full color silkscreen art prints and posters.

In 2001, I received a Grammy nomination for Best CD Package Design for
“The Shaming Of The True”, a rock opera released posthumously by Kevin Gilbert.
The “package” is a hardbound saddle stitched book featuring Seabury illustrations for every song’s lyric page.

In 2001, I lost the lease to my warehouse studio and started to work almost exclusively in 9x12 drawing pads, filling at least 25 pads with freehand ink drawings. I have published two of these pads, in their entirety as “the art of John Seabury vol 2, books one and two
I have also published other freehand drawings so far as “the Art of John Seabury Vol. 3
Book One Selected Freehand Drawings” and book two “Keep on Smilin”.

In 2004, the long awaited follow up to “the Art of Rock” was released, entitled “the Art Of Modern Rock” and features many reproductions of my work from the previous decade.
I am still making fine art and music poster editions, and am working on building a new print studio.
