About Me

I have been making photographs for twenty-five years. Initially as a means to record my travels in Europe, Asia and Australasia … certainly not photographs for the public consumption, purely personal. However, as with many people that soon turned into a passion for photography and the photographic process. In recent years I have worked at deepening my understanding and as a Physicist by training I have found the Science of the process to be as fascinating as the art. I have worked at resurrecting some of the lost processes for my self and now make contact prints in pure Palladium and Carbon Transfer and am about to perfect the Photogravure technique. I love the whole process of using these historical techniques and how this puts me in touch with the dawn of photography, the look of the image and of course the sheer magic of seeing the image appear before you. Of course, I shoot digital and this has given me the freedom to experiment and to perfect the artistic aspects of the photographic process, but my oeuvre is very much large and ultra-large format B&W images contact printed onto Silver Chloride paper just as Edward Weston might have done! Or onto Palladium in the footsteps of Steichen.

For models I offer a Portraiture experience that you may not get elsewhere (especially now in this digital age) and a very different look and feel to the images generated. For photographers I offer a range of courses, workshops and 'experiences' to bring the magic back to your photography and to help deepen your understanding of the photographic process - something lacking from the digital experience and still every bit as vital for quality digital imagery as it ever was in the days of film. I am an experienced teacher accredited as Advanced Skills by the OfStEd in the UK (the governmental agency responsible for the quality of education), so you can be sure of a quality educational experience in working with me in my workshops. I can also offer the opportunity to try your hand at large format photography (don't worry if you don't have the equipment I have enough to lend if you need it) and to learn about my practical method for working in this way (my darkroom is completely portable for example and does not need the re-purposing of a room in your house).

Contact me if you want to work with me or are interested in my courses - I think that the Fashion Portraiture Experience might be of particular interest to Photographic colleagues on MM.
