About Me

I guess it’s important for you to understand where I’m coming from and how I work, so here are a few lines ‘about me’..

When you specialize in this sort of area it is essential to love the outdoors and see it as a playground. I have done my fair share of extreme sports in my time and it was a very natural transition to move into photographing them. I’m a climber, skater and longboarder, caver, snowboarder and have also been a ranger in my time. Couple that with a genuine love of photography and I’m in my element!

Being involved in these sports enables me to be a bit more fearless when getting shots - I really like to get right in there and see the whites of their eyes which is how I create such a bold feel. I want people to see what I am seeing and feel the exhilaration of being in the action. I like to bring this philosophy into all shoots that I do whether in the studio or halfway up a mountain. This way the client is always guaranteed that striking look and intensity.

I won’t lie, this approach has resulted in a fair few dings and bruises but it's worth it to get the shot I want! I think it’s important for the client to see that sort of dedication, especially in this snap happy age. Most people can take a point and shoot photo – but only a professional can really 'make' a picture.

I genuinely respect the extremists who are pushing the boundaries of sport and themselves – they totally inspire me. But I’m equally blown away by people who put themselves out there whatever they choose to do, starting up their own business for example – they're still taking risks and it’s still brave. That’s real adventure.

I shoot exclusively in digital now having moved away from film in 2008. I work using Canon and predominately with strobes, in particular Elinchrom. I'm lucky to live in reach of many an outdoor playground – the Peaks, Snowdonia, the Lakes not to mention the urban environments of the Parkour and skate boys.

So far my work has been featured in Photography Monthly, World of Photography bookazine, and at exhibitions in both California and Colorado.
