About Me

My name is Jack Hughes, Founder and owner of the Fast Growing Jack Hughes Photography, I'm 23 years old I have been doing photography since I was 13 it is my life. I can't wait to work with you and grow my love and vision with all of you. Welcome To A New Light. "Any thing is possible if you close your eyes but keep your mind wide open"

Aspiring models are always asking me for advice on how to get into the industry without getting burned. I've taken the time to compile a list of essentials that I feel every new model should consider before he or she attempts to move into this line of work.

I would like to encourage models and photographers alike to make amendments to what I have started below.

Rule 1: Never travel alone.

Always have someone with you when you go on a shoot. Having a friend along is important for your safety. Friends can also help to elicit positive emotions that will help you to have fun, be yourself, and feel comfortable on a shoot. Happy model = better images.

Rule 2: Be very selective in who you choose to work with.

There are a lot of hacks out there who are just looking to get young girls out of their clothing. This DOES NOT help your modeling career. Maintain your integrity. You'll be thankful down the road.

Rule 3: Be Positive

Obviously, it's important to bring a good attitude to every shoot. Be courteous. Be friendly. Ask if there is anything you can do to help. You'll be amazing at how much this will improve your report, and your reputation, with people in the industry.

Rule 4: Be prepared. Here are a list of things you should always take to a shoot.

A Friend
Cell Phone (as if we ever leave home without it)
Comfortable walking shoes
Bottled Water
A Friend
Small Mirror
Touch up Makeup
Several Outfits (not your entire closet)
Warm Coat (if it's cold out)
A Friend
Backpack to carry everything in
Positive Attitude

Rule 5: Shoot First, Party After

Don't go out and hammered the night before a shoot! Hangovers suck. Puffy, bloodshot eyes are not flattering. Plus the strobes of a flash will amplify this by 1000 times. Obviously, you wouldn't get drunk the night before a marathon, so don't hit up the bar the night before a shoot. Get plenty of rest, kick ass at your photo shoot, party after.

Rule 6: Maintain Professional Communication

If you want to avoid promoting the stereotype that models are stupid and shallow, take the time to ensure that your communication skills are intelligent and courteous. The following is an example of poor communication:

hey i lik ur work we shld shoot together some time i dont knw what my schedule is for next week but ill let you knw

Obviously you wouldn't write this way when applying for a job, so don't write this way when applying for a shoot. We all use computers. We all have spell check. And you're not saving any time by skipping the punctuation either. So do it right.

Here is how your letter should read:

Hello my name is Jane and I just wanted to say that I really like your work. I would love the opportunity to collaborate with you on a shoot. Please contact me if you are interested in meeting. Thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.

And since we're always looking for short cuts, here's a hint: you can save this letter on your desktop and copy/paste it wherever you need.

Rule 7: Don't Flake Out

This one is important for models and photographers alike. Don't flake out on your engagements. If you agree to do a shoot, show up on time. No one likes being stood up. This is the fastest way to ruin your reputation. Photographers take their work very seriously, and our time is important. If we clear our schedules to shoot with you, and you don't show up, you can be sure you've burned a bridge that will never be rebuilt.

Rule 8: Don't Expect Instant Results

Modeling is hard work. There's no way around it. It takes a lot perseverance. When you are first starting out, you probably won't get paid. In fact, you probably won't get paid for a long time. First, you have to build your portfolio. Then you have to sign with an agency. Then you have to go on auditions.
