About Me

Matthew Pritchard is a freelance photographer living in Long Island City, New York. Growing up in Altoona, Pennsylvania, he developed both an active imagination and an appreciation for the curious detail.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Italian Language and Literature from Temple University in Philadelphia. He earned his Masters Degree in Creative Writing with a concentration in Poetry at the New School for Social Research.

At Temple, he discovered a passion for the still image while studying black and white film photography under Steven Berkowitz. There, he came to admire such masters of the art as Henri Cartier-Bresson, André Kertész, Robert Frank, Walker Evans, Sal Leiter, Ernst Haas, and Lee Friedlander. He also began to develop his signature style – the ability to shoot a photograph that, while formally sophisticated, conveys an indelible emotional truth.

In 2007, he took a pilgrimage to Tanzania with a group dedicated to helping children who had been orphaned by AIDS. While there, Mr. Pritchard unexpectedly reawakened his lost passion for photography. He has been joyfully taking photographs ever since.

Mr. Pritchard has taken numerous photography classes at the International Center of Photography. He is fascinated with composition and he admires the photograph’s unique ability to capture a moment that becomes something transcendent and enduring.
