From his early days in theatre to professional photography shoots, Richard Unger creativity led his career.

Stage lighting which he learned in his early theatre days always found its way into his photographs.

€œAt 16, I found myself building sets for big bands – Pink Floyd, Queen, and The Osmond. As well as acts as diverse as Bolshoi ballet, the Kirrov, Welsh National Opera, and the traditional English pantomime.
In the mid-1970s, He found himself working as lighting technician backstage in London'€™s West End theatres. He also spent time on the road, as a sound and lighting technician touring shows around England.

In 1978, he took a degree in photography, focusing on advertising and journalism. His early photography work centred around the stage, creating publicity shots for international pop stars and local music acts. During this time he joined a growing press agency in Chester his home town. His then, boss became in the eighties the UK'€™s top calendar photographer.

For several years after, he worked again at his old studio producing calendars with top a top English photographer shooting everything from models to motor cars, boats and films.

Influenced by the work of cinematographer John Altman, Cornel Lucas and Andy McBean to include his work on early motion picture lighting, he attempts to create a similar style in his work. Paying close attention to lighting and the relationship of the lights to the subject are paramount.

Taking a break from professional photography, he strapped cameras around his neck and set off on world travels, shooting images along the way. While he embraced technology, he clung to photography basics, classifying himself as an €œold school photographer.

Today he is found mainly on film sets shooting add campaigns for feature films.
