About Me

SHINO YANAGAWA

Photographer

Born in Niigata, Japan
Raised in Tokyo, Japan

Shino Yanagawa hails from the capital of Japan, Tokyo with a focused lens which reflects the sharp imagery of her hometown. As a world traveler, Shino has allowed the many faces of life to shape her perspective as an artist. After spending two years living in Andalucia, Spain her eyes set on New York City. She now calls Brooklyn home, and has appropriately adapted its “keeps on taking it” mindset.
Shino’s photos have graced the covers of several publications such as Blue Note Japan, bmr (Black Music Review), AGORA (Japan Airlines), JTB publishing, GQ Japan, 25ans, NYLON Japan, Brutus, ELLE Japan, Sound and Recording Magazine, CREA Traveler, Nikkei News Paper, Asahi News Paper, Sankei News Paper and many more. In 2000, her two-month sojourn to Nepal culminated in the solo photography exhibition The Wind In Nepal in her native Japan. An avid music lover, many of Shino's subjects have included musicians such as Beyoncé, Q-Tip, Wyclef Jean, and Roy Ayers.
Although Shino has accumulated a wealth of experience over the years, her lens is now pointed to the everyday jewels walking the streets. Her goal is to bring out the joy and pain, which exists in all things, and find the beauty hidden within. Shino’s photo “Brownsville Sunset” represents this idea and was featured as part of the Curate NYC exhibition held in the Rush Arts Gallery. Her most renown exhibit entitled “We The People: The Citizens of N.Y.C.H.A in pictures and words” has been shown in Dakar, Senegal as a part of the FESMAN festival and was most recently displayed at the Brooklyn Historical Society. The work is a collaborative effort between Shino and writer Rico Washington. She lives in New York City but works around the world.
