Devaughney L. Samuels, also known as D. L. Samuels, is a self taught aspiring cinematographer and photographer based in Jamaica, who is very passionate about the visual arts. As a child, listening to different kinds of music, he often tried to imagine the visuals through a unique perspective, before actually considering whether or not a video had already been released.

In collaboration with a few like-minded colleagues, D. L. Samuels began an event-centric photography business, approximately three years ago. After this initial stint in event photography, he ventured into a new solo project, known as HD Jamaica. HD Jamaica was created with the aim to highlight the beauty of Jamaica, whether in the form of music, people, landscape, etc. Unfortunately at this point, D. L. was not in possession of any initial photography equipment, thus visuals found through the world wide web were used to create the main content for this. Eventually, this venture grew into a start-up photography business in Summer 2013, when the first piece of integral equipment was acquired, and his love for photography developed even further.

This newfound love was nurtured, and an immersion in fine art photography followed soon after. Within the first year, D. L. has encountered a number of other creative minds, that have not only helped him to develop his portfolio in both photography, but also have encouraged him to delve deeper into his “first love” of cinematography and hone this skill.

D. L. Samuels’ aim is to bring fine art cinematography that is borne in Jamaica, to the greater global landscape, thus providing a novel perspective to showcase the true potential of Jamaican talent.
