I have been a professional commercial photographer for over two decades.  My clients include magazines, corporations, and advertising agencies.  Throughout the years, I have photographed all sorts of things.  But my true joy always has been taking pictures of people.  And my newest joy is photographing people for my stock photography.

Let me define stock photography by giving an example.  An advertising agency is creating an ad for a client.  The agency needs a photo of a woman, standing in a park, wearing a funny hat.  The agency can get this photo in one of two ways.  It can hire a photographer, hire a model, purchase a whole bunch of hats, scout around for just the right park, etc.

The other option, which would be quicker and much cheaper, would be to locate an already exiting photo of a woman, standing in a park, wearing a funny hat.  For that, the agency contacts a type of business called a stock house.  Stock houses hold thousands and thousands of photos.  When a request is made for a photo, the stock house pours through all of its images, looking for just the right one.  Or, as in this example, the advertising agency itself can search the stock house’s images online.

Stock photographers, like me, supply these stock houses with images on a continuing basis.  I work with both models and non-models, shooting at their home or apartment, on city streets, on college campuses, and in parks.
