I am a lover of light. I remember being fascinated by negatives when I was a child. I would hold them up to the light and study what I saw until it became familiar. The face of a family member, a tree, one of the eight cats I grew up with, the Delaware River – they would reveal themselves to me by way of this skewed imprint illimunated by the window behind it. I was hooked. I wanted to record the way I saw things, to share my perspective.

As I see it, available light is the gateway drug that leads to studio lighting. In many cases, you don’t abandon what your addiction started with, you just add to it and revisit it all the time. Sometimes you just need a bigger effect, a more powerful and controlled outcome. The beauty of studio lighting is that you can create any kind of mood by manipulating the light to acheive the impact you are envisioning, rain or shine. For me, the appreciation and obsession for each is equal.

No matter what I am shooting, a band, fashion, a wedding, a scene in a foreign place, and no matter what temperature of light I am using, I try to remind myself to always carry my camera with clarity, a sense of humor, romance and a touch of rawness…just to keep things interesting.
