About Me

ABOUT ME

I’m a fine art painter and focus on the human figure. Please take a look at my work, as it will tell you more about what I do.

I choose models who have a unique look and an intriguing air. I value individuality, uniqueness, and the creativity that the right model brings to a session. A successful session results in material that is the basis for my artwork in the form of paintings or drawings. As such, I look for a certain energy that a model is able to bring, beyond being able to hit typical poses. A model’s willingness to share her interests, values, education, and experiences kindles the creativity of the session. I have worked with models who also work as professional actors, yoga instructors, dancers, burlesque performers, graduate students, costume designers, graphic designers, photographers, moms, and more.

THE SESSION

A typical session is between 2 and 4 hours in length. Depending on the goals of the project, which I would discuss with the model beforehand, a session may be drawing/painting-based or photo-based. For photo-based sessions, I typically photograph the model with multiple outfits, poses, and lighting scenarios, sometimes clothed, partially-clothed, or nude. Some models I have worked with have worn vintage garments that they have collected, or even costumes and lingerie that they have designed and sewn themselves, which is wonderful and much appreciated. My goal here is to obtain reference images that I use as the basis for developed paintings; my goal is NOT to create photographs for publication, or as an end in themselves. In a drawing/painting-based session, the session is typically comprised of one or two long poses with appropriate breaks; here I take reference photos in order to complete the work after the session.

Sessions are relaxed and I enjoy talking with and learning something about the model; some have become friends through our work together. I respect the work that a model does and always treat models well. Models are always paid at the end of the session; I would never expect a model to work for free.

THE STUDIO

My studio is located in the East Garfield Park neighborhood of Chicago. It is a work loft in a historic building of artist and design studios, galleries, and workshops. There is ample parking available in front of the building. I have fans, heaters, and a separate changing area within my studio.
