About Me

Courtney Staton is a storyteller, who uses photography and videography to put women of color at the center of her stories. After coming to UNC Chapel Hill, she continued to grow in her love of storytelling, making her first two short films, "Home", a documentary to promote understanding for victims of domestic violence, and "Customer Service" , a film drawing the line between routine dehumanization of customer service workers and the hidden struggles that go undiscussed. Both of which were screened at film festivals. In 2016, she shifted her focus on photography, and was featured in an exhibit on black identity and activism the following February. She currently serves as Co-president of Campus Y, a hub for social justice on campus, overseeing over 30 committees, global programs, and social innovation ventures. But, her core passion is in using her stories to serve the community, revealing ones that often go unnoticed, giving power to the magic missed everyday.
