About Me

I began painting in 1993 as a high school student and had my first solo exhibition in 1995. From my earliest days, I have preferred to paint from life rather than from a photograph. Its important to relay human presence, a kind of physical manifestation of energy, that exists beyond photographic likeness. I would rather someone say that they understand my feelings rather than compliment "Wow, it looks just like a photo."

I typically work in series. Over the years I've developed a huge body of work migrating through different styles presenting the human figure with different intentions. I feel like psychological and narrative components are the most interesting. For a while I dabbled with constructed narratives, based on thumbnail sketches, then casting myself or others to fill the roll in a designed picture. Lately, I have tried to approach figurative painting in a way that is kind of a throwback to how I made works in the 90's - where I kind of stumble upon someone who has settled into a posture and way of being that is reflective of the current moment in their personal narrative.

I decided to set up this account to share some of my works and possibly find others who are here searching for greater understanding through the process of making figurative images.
