Jackson Wai Chung Tse | 謝瑋聰 (he/she/they) is an interdisciplinary artist and facilitator from Hong Kong, creating work in dance, poetry, theatre, voice, film, prose, music, and the healing arts. As a queer, non-binary, 1.5 generation immigrant-settler, Jackson’s intersectionality is reflected in their creative work, which explores intentional community building in polarizing times, reverence for the land, challenging the mainstream dominant paradigm, queer identities coexisting with cultural values, and Chinese diaspora in the West.
Jackson has created and performed for various national and international stages including the Vancouver Queer Film Festival (Vancouver), Queer Arts Festival (Vancouver), Intrepid Theatre (Victoria), The Calgary Stampede (Calgary), The Coming Out Monologues (Calgary), Blue Canoe Productions (Kingston, Ontario), Lazare Dance Company (Tbilisi, Georgia), and Le Moule Dance Company (Guadeloupe, France).

Jackson is a graduate of Queen’s University, the National University of Singapore, and The University of the State of New York. Jackson is also a MEC Outdoor Nation Ambassador, and works with the brand to express their radically loving relationship with the land through a variety of media.

Jackson identifies as a person of colour to refugee parents, grew up in a low-income, suburban, and conservative home, and had a deeply religious upbringing. As a trauma survivor, they know the importance of giving people the power of choice. They try not to make any assumptions, and they take care to be completely present with the folks they are engaged with. Their facilitation experience comes from their roles at organizations across Canada and the globe, including Next Up, Power of Hope, the North Shore Multicultural Society, Camp fYrefly, Shad Valley International, Tim Horton’s Children’s Ranch, the Quantum Learning Network, the Centre for International Pedagogical Studies in France, the Ministry of Science and Education in Georgia, The Calgary Bridge Foundation for Youth, and numerous post-secondary institutions.

Jackson’s soul gets replenished from sharing food in conscious communities, spending time in nature, and expressing their creativity. In 2019, they are a participant in Playwright Theatre Centre’s Block A program, developing a new collective verbatim theatre piece with immigrant, refugee, and international students for Green Thumb Theatre, premiering at the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival, and stepping into the position of BC Coordinator for the national Next Up Leadership Network. I am an interdisciplinary artist. I started playing the piano when I was 7 years old and graduated with an advanced certificate at level 9 with the Royal Conservatory of Music. I have professional training in dance, singing, and theatre, and have worked as a writer and photographer—traveling to 35 countries around the globe. I have also worked as a living statue for the Calgary Stampede, and have performed my autobiographical one-person show to audiences across the country.

I am fluent in Cantonese and an immigrant, holding dual passports for both Canada and Hong Kong. I can speak French and Mandarin at the intermediate level. I also have completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Queen's University, a Masters Diploma in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) from the University of the State of New York, and an Advanced Scuba Diver's Certification from the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI).

Since moving to Vancouver in late 2017, I have been immersed in film, both in front of and behind the camera. In July 2018, I graduated from the 12-week Frames Film Program, which involved weekly lessons, industry guest speakers, and technical filmmaking skills education from Emily Carr University and Capilano University instructor Ryan Atimoyoo. I also premiered my first film at the Vancouver Queer Film Festival in August 2018 as part of an intergenerational film project named Troublemakers 3.0, a collaboration between Love Intersections, Reel Youth, and Out on Screen.

In the realm of writing, most of my work has been poetry and creative non-fiction. I have written for multiple blogs, including the official blog of Teach and Learn with Georgia, various travel blogs, and the award winning for-youth-by-youth Grip Magazine, a partnership between Alberta Mental Health Board (AMHB) and Venture Publishing.

Most recently I have been exploring vocal improv with Laurel Murphy, body percussion with Damarise St. Marie, and clowning with Txi Whizz and Lisa Voth. I portrayed the queer character Jack in a reading of the new play, We Rise Up in Hot Air by UBC student Zack Currie, in the IGNITE! Youth-Driven Arts Festival. I was also an artist-in-residence at the Queer Arts Festival in June 2018. With a group of other queer folks, I explored issues of identity, racism, colonization, community, and gender using contact dance, theatre, and new media in a performance called Proximity Remix, produced by MachineNoisy Dance Society.

For the upcoming September 2018-August 2019 year, I am honoured to be the new MEC Outdoor Nation Ambassador for Western Canada, and I specifically work to provide access to queer people of colour facing barriers to the outdoors. Finally, I've been accepted into the Winter 2019 cohort of the Block A program with Playwrights Theatre Centre. Six emerging playwrights meet for ten weeks with a senior playwright mentor, where they discuss the fundamentals of writing for performance in a variety of styles, and explore imagination-stimulating writing exercises to expand their craft.

In addition to my other artistic avenues, I am always looking for new opportunities and ways to develop myself.
