I have been a shutterbug for most of my life spanning from the film to the digital era. I have experience with various formats including large and medium format, but have settled on 35mm as the most nimble for my needs. I retired from my finance job to pursue my passion for photography. I currently teach photographic composition, mostly within the context of coastal landscape photography, and in locations including Japan, Hawaii, Iceland, and California.
I am also a headshot photographer seeking to collaborate with models and make-up artists for creative and editorial works involving unique lighting and background elements. Such work is likely not what a typical client would want; however, the creative pieces are meant to help a portfolio stand out.
I am trained to make the best of most light situations (even light at the worst time of day), and my gear can be set up as an on-location or as a portable and stationary indoor studio. Although most of my gear is optimized around headshots, I have flexibility to expand towards 3/4, full length, and small group portraits as well, but with some limitations.
I design my own headshot backgrounds, which can be used on location assuming a wind-free environment of about 21'x13' is available. I can also improvise with material and colors that are available on location.
I am particular about backlight, rim light, strong jawline, and making existing facial features proportional; however, I am most particular about catchlight in the eyes. With high speed sync flash, I enjoy the challenge of photographing during the worst time of day to make it look like gentle sunset or sunrise light...and without calling attention to the flash.
