About Me

Acme Tintype consists of an experienced photographer who shoots the historic medium of tintypes, which are images made of silver that has been deposited onto a metal plate. These images have a unique look, and last for generations. Each hand-made plate is one of a kind, having its own individual character, including some imperfections. I have joined Model Mayhem in order to find models on a TF basis to expand my portfolio before launching my commercial business.

I am looking for models who are enthusiastic, professional, punctual, and ready to experiment in front of the camera. No modeling experience is required.

I am professional and respectful, with a sense of humor and a passion for fine art photography. We will work in my studio (located in Menlo Park, in the SF Bay Area) equipped with the high-end lighting required for tintypes.

The plate is prepared in a darkroom, exposed in a camera, and then developed back in the darkroom. You can then watch as the image emerges. You see the results of each photo minutes after it is taken. Up to two people can fit on one tintype plate. Most photos are either headshots or torso length shots.

Your two and a half hour photo session begins with an initial consultation about your goals for the images. You will also receive an introduction to the tintype process. Two and a half hours is enough time to make approximately five plates, including time for discussion of wardrobe and pose before each photograph, with adjustments in lighting. Five plates usually yield two that are of interest to the model. Feel free to ask any questions during the session, and just remember to have fun. This will be a collaborative effort.

You are responsible for wardrobe and hairstyling (with some input from me). There is a private area for any change of wardrobe.

You will receive in exchange web-resolution images of selected plates, suitable for posting to social media or the web. (Note: I will retain the plate itself, for use later as a sample for paying clients.) I ask that you credit @acmetintype when posting to Instagram, or "Instagram @acmetintype" when posting elsewhere.

I am sometimes accompanied by a second tintype photographer, acting as an assistant, which speeds things up a bit.

If you have a partner and/or patient child, we may be able to make tintype plates of them, too, perhaps in a different session. We can discuss this.

Your signature on a standard model release is required before shooting can begin.

I can best be contacted on IG as @acmetintype. If you contact me, please include a current selfie headshot, so I can see your current look, and your MM#.

Please click the link for my website for further information. Note that this is the commercial website for paying clients, so it refers to "clients" rather than "models."

"Acmetintype is super fun, and if you have the chance to work with them, by all means do. Watching tintypes develop before your eyes is a wonder of chemistry. These guys are serious about quality and honing their craft. They are also efficient. We set out to expose five plates and managed a few more. I'm honored to have been a part of their creative process." Read less
