About Me

Your timing could not be better.  I am not sure if you caught Rip-The-Runway on BET this year.  There was a program on before the program that gives reason for Rip-The-Runway.  A documentary on how there are issues with models of colour and why they are no longer used for high fashion or represented.  Put simple: because designers no longer want to use them, “Blacks have their own style and fashion that can utilize these models, so why should we” – anonymous.  So, I am taking this MM page and using it as my soapbox and assistance for models of colour.

So I am looking for models of colour to fill my portfolio spaces. That's where you come in.  Below is a list of styles of photography that I do.  The list should give you something to think about shooting with me.  Not to worry, I am not a racist; you can find my other MM page and work here: Mayhem #670549.

So at this point, I am only doing limited TFCD shoots for and with models of colour and MUAs.  So let’s kick around some ideas and set a date for a shoot.
Let me tell you how I work:
After the shoot I will begin editing the images and selecting the best images (5-10 max).
When I am done editing (about 2 weeks depending on the volume of images) I will send them to you via email for you to approve and let me know which ones I can post.
I will burn you a CD or DVD (depending on how many we took) of the images, which will be broken in to files on the disk.

Posting - all the images I selected and you approve edited and sized to email or post (Model Mayhem, MySpace etc) with your name and my logo as seen on my page.
Print - all the images I selected and you approve edited and sized for printing, no logo and no name unless requested.
Raw - This will be every image that I took unedited.

My name is Shelly Alexander, a Seattle based general photographer.  My gateway into photography has been as a retouch artist, a style derived from art and cinematography, based on light & shadow, contrast, hues and tones, developed with the teachings of my parents.  I like to think of it this way, I am married to retouching; my mistress is photography.
Education:  1 year at the Art Institute of Chicago (while in 8th grade) major Fine Arts (yes I took a short bus to school)
Auburn University major Architecture
Self taught Photography with the help of Nikon School.

Interested in:  Working with creative new people who will help me expand and reach my goals and expanding my Portfolio.  Must be willing accept my requests for TFCD projects and wanting help with their portfolio development.  My TFCD are limited to my creative projects and special request from creatively brilliant models.

What to do if you want to request a TFCD shoot with me:

1. Have an idea of the type of photography you want me to calibrate on with you.  (See list below)
2. Be comfortable with your body.  If you are not comfortable with yourself it will show in your images.
3. Must be willing to laugh and have fun.  The more you relate to me, the more you will inspire me.

"RACIAL prejudice in the fashion industry has long persisted because of tokenism and lookism. “We already have our black girl,” says a designer to a fashion-show casting agent, declining to see others. Or: “She doesn’t have the right look.” Laziness, paranoia and pedantry may also have something to do with the failure to hire black models for shows and magazine features in any meaningful number, but, hey, that’s just a guess. " [NYT]

Alarmed by the lack of non-white models on the catwalk, Vogue Italia will feature black models almost exclusively in the July issue of what's often called the world's most influential fashion magazine.

"This idea came about as a reaction to the models of today,'' commented Franca Sozzani, Vogue Italia's editor. "I go to a fashion show and every girl is blond and blue-eyed and they all walk the same and look the same. There are so many beautiful black women not being used."
