Like many people, I played around with photography in high school, but it wasn’t until I became a professional skater that I discovered my true passion for the art form. I had begun casually photographing the many talented skaters I met at various competitions when a professional photographer gave me a gift that would forever change my life:  A Nikon N90 with a variety of lenses and a flash. It was then that my passion really began to take hold and grow.
Unlike the digital cameras of today, with the Nikon N90, I had to learn how to select the correct film(s) for my subject and how the lighting conditions would affect the shot – essentially visualizing the end results and manually adjusting the lighting if needed. And of course, film was not cheap, and limited the number of shots you could take in any session. Learning the trade while always being mindful of all these factors has made me a better and more proficient photographer today.

Since I was also passionate about skating, I focused my energy there first. Skating is a fast-paced sport, and was a great way to hone my skills.  I never knew the what, when, or where of what we would be doing on a given day, so I had to learn to adapt and problem solve quickly and creatively. To make a successful skating photograph, you must combine elements of sport, portrait, and fashion photography. Not only do you have to capture the trick, but you have to do it in a stylish and interesting way, and all in a fraction of a second.  Lucky for me, I had access to some of the best skaters in the world! After my photos started appearing in print magazines, I began booking freelance work. This quickly expanded my repertoire to include fashion, portrait, product, wildlife, and landscapes.

The advent of digital cameras brought on another period of intense learning and helped to hone my skills even further

As a photographer I am never satisfied with “good enough.” I always seek out ways to improve and learn just for the shear enjoyment of it. As a business owner - I own a manufacturing company that make parts for skates, as well as clothing and accessories – I have the unique perspective of also being a client. I understand what needs to be done to highlight a product for the intention of increasing sales.

Thanks to my photography, the last 20 years has been an amazing journey. I am blessed to have worked with many incredible people and to travel to some of the world’s most exotic locations - including The Galapagos Islands and Iceland! Each new client brings a unique experience and a chance to learn more about my craft.  I look forward to working with you!
