About Me

I am a menswear designer in Seattle, Washington.  I work independently and have a public studio/showroom to feature my work on Capitol Hill.  I offer custom tailoring to clients, and also show seasonal collections on the runway and in galleries.  I work locally, but show and exhibit internationally.

A little about me:

Michael Cepress holds a BA in Art from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Fibers from the University of Washington. An intense interest in the male wardrobe and tailoring traditions has led him to focus on the design and production of menswear, and write extensively on fashion’s relationship to gender and popular culture. In 2005, his debut menswear collection was featured in the sold-out runway show "Michael Cepress Presents An Evening of Men's Fashion.” A subsequent event in 2006 featured a menswear collection in the runway showcase "Michael Cepress Introduces the Modern Gentleman." Cepress is a 2007 nominee for the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Art Award, and is seeing attention worldwide. Reaching beyond the bounds of fashion, Cepress’ work will travel internationally throughout 2008 with the exhibition “RRRIPP: Paper Fashion”, featured beside the likes of John Galliano, Issey Miyake, Hussein Chalayan and Walter Van Beirendonck. His work is also featured in an accompanying publication about paper in fashion. He is currently working as the costume designer for a production by director Robert Wilson, slated to premier in Poland in 2008. Cepress lives and works in Seattle, Washington.

“Creating garments that people can truly live with…wash, wear, sweat on, love, and wash again… is an amazingly exciting proposition to me, and it’s the one I plan to spend the rest of my life investigating.” -MC

"Clothes for Cepress are culturally coded expressions of rarified desire. His work is rooted in the 19th-century conception of the dandy, a type Charles Baudelaire commended as 'sublime without interruption,' he who 'lives and sleeps before a mirror.'"
- Regina Hackett, Art Critic, Seattle Post-Intelligencer

"He is an artist and a craftsman, who gets the cultural and historical messages clothing can send..."
- Ries Niemi, Artist
