About Me

Seeing the world creatively is vision. Seeing the world creatively through the camera lens is art.

My foundation is nature, macro, micro-landscape and abstract. A stint in sports photography moved me into the people-action genre. From there, I've explored classical and small-group portraiture. People bring a complex dimension to photography. Flowers and rocks don't move. They don't tense or have a rough day. Even sports-action photography is largely a function of observation, location, timing and skill. The photographer doesn't have to coax out a pose or work for a playful smile. Portraiture, in contrast, challenges my artistic skills in ways more nurture than nature. It's all about creating and capturing that moment where my subject can be seen the way they want to be seen. It is a fun challenge on both sides of the glass.

Equipment notes: I use older Nikon lenses in much of my work - manual focus, big glass, heavy metal. I love the older glass. Manual shooting requires more attention by the photographer, but the results are rewarding and much more personal. My lighting equipment is Norman gear from the '70s, which I maintain and repair myself. I have collected, and in some cases created, lighting modifiers that help to create lighting to accent and enhance my subjects.

Location notes: I am equipped for studio, on-location and mobile work. I frequent Union 206 in Alexandria, VA; Shooting at Red in Frederick, MD; and 2100M in DC.
