About Me

It is always best to ask for a reference before arranging a shoot with a photographer whom you have never met. Any model who has worked with me will be pleased to give me a reference - do please ask!

I'm a photographer working from my studio and on location in the west of Ireland. On contract to the Connacht Tribune newspaper for events, sports, etc. but I love the arty side of photography, that's why I'm here! A graduate of NCAD, I'm also a passionate illustrator/artist and drew editorial cartoons for the Galway Independent for three years (see http://kinndi.com). I'm particularly keen to help create new, imaginative portfolios on CD or presented in quality A4 display books for people starting out in the modelling profession. No offence meant to anyone but I prefer to work with models who are not caked in heavy make-up, false eyelashes, fake tan, etc. I'm pretty good at editing so don't worry if you have a few zits, I'll zap them in Photoshop. I dislike painted-on 'masks' intensely, I believe that a good make-up artist's aim should be that their make-up can hardly be seen.

I use professional Canon equipment DSLR bodies, lenses and lighting and I have access to some exceptional locations, all within 20 km. of Galway city. Props I like to use (and can bring to shoot) include guitars, (electric and acoustic), basses, mandolin, army sword, real canvas paintings, vintage comics and books, vinyl records and 1960s record-player, granny glasses, candelabra, Venetian and ceramic masks, etc. See: http://eirefoto.com/images/enter_props.jpg

I can recommend two make-up artists and a number of stylists in County Galway. I am also an artist (see: http://kennedyart.net) and I can draw temporary tattoos (which last for 2-3 days) prior to the shoot if you like that idea!

The actual photoshoot is free, you pay only for photos that you like [high-resolution jpeg files on CD or your own memory stick]. Medium resolution jpeg files with watermark (fine for web) by email are free. I'm always happy to do test shoots with people who are new to modelling so talk to me!

N.B: As an active animal welfare worker in my spare time, I will not photograph real fur - it looks better on its original owner.

Photoshop Rant: No more than 80% of the finished photograph happens on the shoot itself. No matter how sophisticated or high-tech the equipment, 99% of RAW images need to be edited/retouched, sometimes only very slightly. I am an experienced Adobe Photoshop tutor and not wishing to sound over-critical of other photographers, some (I stress the word 'some') of the portfolios show that their editing needs more time and care. They may have 'Portrait Professional' or 'Beauty Pilot' on their computers and may feed every photo of you through those applications, but . . . this is not how professional re-touching should be done! It must be done slowly, carefully, by hand! Please see the sample (before and after) in my album.
