About Me

My name is Juan Carlos Herrera, I am  a visual artist.  Currently I am an MFA in Photography and Media (MFA '21) at the California Institute of the Arts (CALARTS). I did an  MA in Visual and Critical Studies ( MA '18) at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), with a research of fashion photography, and I was the Photo Editor of the SAIC's newspaper Fnewsmagazine.

Artist Statement:

My academic and artistic practice is related to notions of identity; in terms of gender, erotic and cultural identity. I consider fashion a cultural text -as in literature- an in-between space where textual and visual narratives intertwine while in the space of marketing and commerce.

I like to meeting people from different aspects of the fashion world. I am interested in collaboration with models, hairdressers, fashion designers and fashion photographers from Latin-America and the USA.

I enjoy working with talented outgoing people who are incredibly committed to evolving their skill-set. A touch of crazy never hurst either.

Please contact me if you are interested in rates and availability.

I have just a few conditions for working with me:

-Signing a release contract is required.

-I usually do not require nudity in my photos, nor do the publications in which I publish, but as some of my photos are for fine art projects I prefer working with models that don't have no nudity rules.

-No inhibitions. We are professionals, and part of the creative process is to open up to one another to be able to create a great image.

-For fine art work, sometimes I use film, which means models do not get a photos at the end of the week.  Two weeks  is more likely.

Among the themes that I explore in photography, is the notion of transsexuality, cultural identity, or the limits between commercial and fine art. I am interested in erotic and artistic photography, visually exploring different forms of sexual/erotic expression.Currently I am working on the subject of BDSM culture and how it can be represented in an honest and beautiful way in commercial magazines.

I rarely use photoshop or localized photo manipulation. I work to create a real visual moment, and capture it in a click.
