The cold, colourless tone of most of the picture makes the blood stand out very powerfully, the performance is as dramatic and convincing as the special effects, and the effect of the "guide lines" drawn on you is to subtly yet chillingly imply that we are only witnessing the beginning of this surreal act of self-mutilation.
