About Me

Hi,

I'm a hobbyist photographer and artist. I was inspired to take up art art a few years ago after seeing work by artists like Mark Demsteader, Charles Malinsky, Artur Golacki and Derek Jones. I became very interested in figurative work and practised this by searching through magazines or newspapers for images to draw. This approach has served me well to a point but as I progressed I found myself wanting to create my own images to draw from. In this way I can choose the lighting, pose and overall mood of the piece. Ulitmately my aim is to become accomplished at drawing live from a sitter but these can be hard to find and of course the durations needed are longer and therefore the expense is greater. Therefore I use a photographic session with a model to capture the basic images from which I can then select the ones I feel will work best as a drawing.

I'd like to say I lived and worked from a trendy ex warehouse studio in Hoxton with artist's materials and camera accessories strewn over the place, and a bed like Tracy Emin's in the corner. However until my lottery numbers come up and I can afford such a space I'll have to settle for working from home where my lounge trebles as, my lounge (obviously), my photo studio and my art studio.

So, I am on MM to seek models who would like to work with me.

My set up is simple using a continuous light source normally from above in a darkened room with a backdrop and reflector. This provides me with enough scope to create mood and some interesting shapes and shadows. A session would generally last just a couple of hours, it is clothed/implied nude and and you would only need to bring your make up and a very basic plain dress that exposed your shoulders and arms and maybe your back. The picture on this page give you an idea of sort of thing I mean.

You are more than welcome to bring a friend or partner along for security (but prep them that they may well end up helping out by holding a reflector!) Any creative ideas you can bring to the session or before would be well received. Other than that bring a smile and a friendly attitude, this is my hobby and it's meant to be fun! :)

I'll pay reasonable rates (perhaps in the region of £25/hour) and travel expenses both which we can agree after making contact I guess. If you like any of the shots I take of you then you would be welcome to have those as well. You do not require any specific modelling experience as I will chat with you intially to explain what I'm looking for. Again the pictures here give you a good feel what I do. If necessary I can provide sketches and pictures to demonstrate the sort of poses I'll need either in advance of the shoot so you can learn them up front or we can simply go through few or on the day and see how we go.

So, if you are new to modelling and require somewhere for a bit of practise where you can have some input yourself, i.e. stop and review the pictures, have a chat then make some adjustments then I might just be the person to work with you. If you happen to be an experienced model then great I'm sure you'll be able to produce the poses I'm looking for with ease.

Ultimately I want to create drawings that are soulful, wistful, sensitive and very feminine. As for your look, well that can be quite varied. A lot of different looks can work well if we get the poses right. Therefore I have no pre conceptions about your appearance but for guidelines I would say that a "different" look or quirky feel with a degree of elegance are factors that would make a picture of mine work well. A glamourous look is fine just as long as we tone it down and keep it classy. Think more Audrey Hepburn or Carla Bruni than Jordon or Jodi Marsh.

I hope you like the look of what I do and are interested in a little bit of light hearted and fun "work" (It's not work really is it!) and in turn can help me to progress my hobby.

Gary
