A test shoot or TFCD/TFP called time for CD or time for print is recommended - this is where you trade with a photographer, your time for his/her photographs for your portfolio. Once you have a good portfolio then you are still best to have some test time with any new photographer...it gives the model and photographer time to understand each other - in all cases where shoots go wrong - there is no planning, no understanding.
